Democratic Debate with One Addition

It’s 2020, and although this may seem like another typical article regarding the presidential election, I can assure you that it is not. While watching the Democratic debate on February 19th, I managed to actually stay awake for the full two hours of the debate, a feat I am exceptionally proud of. I do not say this in such a way as to dismiss any of the candidates, but simply to say that I found this particular debate quite substantive and closely relevant to my personal concerns in the current political realm.

Environmental Degradation in the Modern Era

I once remember a high school history teacher of mine telling me how he did not know much about the environment. Still, he thought it was becoming increasingly worse. I then remember my AP Chem teacher, during my sophomore year of high school, confirming the fact that the environment is degrading, and that one did not need to be in an AP science class to recognize this. When I first heard about this issue, I did not know what to think, as I had grown accustomed to weather disasters such as Hurricane Sandy affecting my own area of New Jersey. I had wrongly assumed for some reason that this was natural and that these hurricanes and pollutants in the air were just some kind of byproduct of human existence. It did not take me long, however, to realize that this is not the way the environment should be and that global temperatures rising is negatively impacting the world.

Taking Hate to Court

Here in America it is not unusual to see people hailing from different countries from around the world. It can often be thought that America is the “Great Melting Pot,” infused with people who add to the cultural richness that makes America so unique and unlike other nations. Despite this, however, it must also be acknowledged that there do exist racial tensions which not only divide America as a nation but divide us as a people too.
