Last evening I finally took it upon myself to watch Whiplash, the 2014 Oscar winning film about an obsessed jazz drummer and his borderline psychotic music conductor. I realize I’m a little late to the film game here but I have a lot more free time now as it so happens. One of the biggest lines from the movie that sticks out to me is J.K. Simmons’ character’s line: “The two most harmful words in the English language are good job.”
Two days ago, the paper got an email from firstname.lastname@example.org, detailing a day of action going on today, April 1st, at the corner of Willis Avenue and East 139th Street in the Bronx. At 2pm, the tenants in the South Bronx will converge to demand rent freezes as well as better living conditions during this international pandemic.
Well ladies and gentlemen, and those who do not identify with either gender, we’ve reached the apex of hell. The rest of the semester will be conducted from the privacy and loneliness of our respective homes. I’m not happy about it, you’re probably not happy about it, but nonetheless this is the situation we’ve found ourselves in. My heart truly goes out to the seniors, both those in high school and those at Fordham who are really getting screwed over by this. We love and appreciate you, and we wish you the best. That being said, we’ve got to get to the meat of the issue.
Those of you who know me are probably aware of the fact that I’m a massive Batman fan. I grew up watching the animated series, dressing up, and reading stories about Batman. So naturally one of my favorite villains, if not my favorite, has been the Joker. Completely devoid of morality or any sense of human decency, the Joker causes chaos and mayhem wherever he goes, pissing off Batman and driving him ever closer to the edge. One of the reasons I think the Joker makes such a good villain is that he has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He is just this being of pure evil that has no regard for any of his actions and how they affect people.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump issued a series of 7 pardons and 4 commutions. Despite the president’s own legal trouble with impeachment and numerous accounts of sexual assault or harassment, the president did not hold back when exercising his presidential power to pardon. According to CNN, the reasons for said pardons were extremely vague. The president is quoted as saying “These are all people that you have to see the recommendations. I rely on recommendations, very importantly.”
I wasn’t sure how I’d react to this album. After all, it’s been about 20 years since Ozzy’s last solo album and the guy hasn’t been in the best of health. Not to mention trying to understand him speak is incredibly difficult. I have to say, however, that I was pleasantly surprised when I gave the album a listen. It’s a nice blend of metal, classic rock, ballads, and even a little rap and pop. Collaborations from popular artists like Post Malone and Travis Scott make it all the more interesting and timelier.
There comes a time in every man’s life when he must explore the new, the different, the unusual. It’s good to get out of your shell and try new things, to help expand your horizons.
