A Playlist for Your Moods

Mental health is composed of three main categories; cognitive, behavioral, and emotional wellbeing according to Medical News Today. In regards to emotional wellbeing, it is important to remember all emotions are valid and worthy of being accepted and expressed in healthy ways. There are a variety of beneficial coping mechanisms for managing difficult emotions, one of which is listening to music.

Dancing to Boogie Shoes

Dancing is a cure-all for sadness. Whenever I’m feeling sad or alone, I blast the Saturday Night Fever album at full volume and dance like a maniac. The fervid movements of my limbs distract me for a short time from whatever it is that I’m anxious about at that moment. Out of all the songs on the album “Boogie Shoes” by KC and the Sunshine band is my favorite by far.

Blackwater Park, A Melancholy Masterpiece

Almost every time it’s rainy or dreary outside, my first instinct is to put on Blackwater Park, by Opeth. It’s hard to overstate how much of an impact that Opeth’s music has had on me both as a musician and a lover of music. It’s hard to separate any particular song on the album in a single or a separate entity, partly because all the songs are incredibly long, and also because of how they seamlessly flow together while still remaining with their distinct identities.

A Doc for the Swifties

America, look what you made Taylor Swift do. After spending the last several years struggling to win back public favor amid waves of media criticism and online hate comments, Swift has finally found a way to tug at the public’s heartstrings once more. She achieves this not through her usual glossy pop anthems but through the more subtle art of film (and no, I don’t mean Cats.)

Pete Buttigieg is a Psychopath

On February 3, America looked on in horror as the dumpster fire known as “The 2020 Iowa Caucus” burned itself into the annals of American history. It was undoubtedly one of the sketchiest elections in US history. From delays in reporting the results to inconsistencies in voting tallies, the Iowa Caucus was a disaster in almost every way possible.

Dem Debate, Primaries, and Voting

Voting is super cool! At the risk of sounding like an out-of-touch politician, voting systems are intensely important. As much as I wish there was more attention on voting systems, it’s far from most Americans’ priorities. However, the debacle that was the Iowa Caucuses has given me slight hope that such a terrible system might change.

Toothpick Towers

Having lived near New York City for the entire 20 years of my life, I have watched the skyline change as new, unique skyscrapers are constructed, adding new characteristics to the already unique jagged skyline. Some of them are absolutely beautiful. For example, I believe One World Trade Center is an awe-inspiring sight, and the Bank of America Tower, being the first V4 Platinum LEED-certified building in the nation, is truly a marvel of modern engineering.

The Good Place Ends on a High Note

After investing four years into The Good Place and becoming way too emotionally attached to the characters, I sat down to watch the finale in January, praying that it didn’t let me down: I have been burned too many times by a great show ending in a terrible finale (Looking at you, Game of Thrones, How I Met Your Mother; need I go on?). Thankfully, though, this time I was not disappointed. The 90-minute finale brought a bittersweet end to the incredible journey this show took us on.
