A sequel to the feel-good movie of summer 2008 is happening.
by Claire Nunez
I am a serious fan of Mamma Mia! and the Swedish band behind the music, ABBA. “Dancing Queen” was the first song I knew all of the words to. I know the words to every song in the musical. I saw the show on Broadway and at local theaters four times. I have seen the movie ten times in the past year alone– I’m sorry the movie just warms my heart and it was on HBO Go, is that so wrong? Probably.
When I found out there was going to be a sequel, I am pretty sure I cried for 20 minutes. The first trailer was released late this December, and I was tagged in the comments of it on Facebook six times in the past three hours. I have a lot of thoughts and revelations about it so, here is everything I know (and am guessing) about the movie:
1. Meryl Streep is not in the movie….
That is right, folks. I am pretty sure that Meryl Streep’s character, Donna is dead. They killed off the main character? Well, the sequel is mostly about how Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is pregnant and has to figure out life– I think. The trailer included a lot of scenes from the first film so my best guess is that Meryl Streep just didn’t want to be in the sequel. They should have called me; I would’ve been a great Donna.
2. Pretty much everyone else returned.
Let’s open the debate of which one of Sophie’s dads is hotter. I vote Colin Firth. Cast your vote at the bottom of this article.
3. Cher is in it?
Yeah…so Cher is playing Sophie’s grandmother. I find this pretty confusing because in the first film, it is assumed that Donna’s mother is dead. She has a line that is something like, “Who has it out for me? Probably my mother.” I am not that obsessed that I know the line, okay? But back to Cher. She pretty much just has a cameo as Donna’s mother. Also, Cher is only three years older than Meryl Streep so if I were Cher, I’d be offended.
4. A lot of the movie is like, a flashback.
This is the part that made me cry. It showed Donna meeting all of Sophie’s dads! The story behind the story! From the very short trailer, I could tell that Donna is going to be painted as this incredibly strong and powerful woman– as she is. She did raise a daughter by herself while starting her own hotel business in Greece. Let’s give the woman a round of applause.
5. There is going to be a lot of music from the first movie.
The height of Donna and the Dynamos is represented in this movie. This means that there will be a lot of “Mamma Mia!” and “Dancing Queen.” Maybe there will even be some different ABBA songs thrown in there.
6. Sophie’s dads as young guys are pretty damn hot….
Apparently, they are famous. I have never seen them before– probably because I only watch Mamma Mia! Anyway, take a gander.
7. It is being released in late July, 2018.
Yeah, I’ll be at the midnight premiere. Until then, I’m just going to watch the trailer.
