Review: “Malibu” by Miley Cyrus

This song is literally about Malibu, California.  Not much to imagine.

Miley Cyrus released her new song, “Malibu” yesterday.  It is a totally new direction from her last album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, which was completely different from Bangerz, which was totally new in comparison to anything she had ever released before that.  I think Miley is just a chameleon when it comes to music, and that is cool, especially for me, a longtime fan of hers.

“Malibu” is kinda acoustic sounding.  It pretty much only features some guitar and hand clapping.  It is very clean sounding.  “Malibu” sounds like California in a bottle, that is if you could put California in a bottle.  Miley really uses the raspiness of her voice to make the song seem more simple and rustic.

The music video for “Malibu” is not as weird I expected it to be.  Miley’s last tour was just a completely wild mess of glitter and sexual innuendos, so I expected anything else Miley had her hand in would also be just over the top.  She is pretty much just dancing and singing in what I am assuming is Malibu, California with one of her dogs.  No crazy makeup or outfits.

I really like “Malibu.” It is real to me.  I love the direction she seems to be taking, even though it is so different from everything else she’s created.  I am super excited to hear her next album.
